VOLLEYBALL: Hornets Claim 3rd Place at Groesbeck

Playing three grueling matches in a span of five hours, Gatesville High went 2-1 Saturday to finish third overall in the 20-team Groesbeck Invitational. The Hornets opened with a 25-22, 25-18 win over Godley, then lost to Class 4A No. 2 Huffman-Hargrave team 15-25, 26-24, 15-25 in the semifinals. GHS outlasted Class 3A No. 4 Peaster 23-25, 29-27, 25-22 in the third-place game for its 18th win in 23 outings so far this season. "It was a good tournament, very competitive both days," said GHS head coach Rickey Phillips. "We got the chance to play teams form different regions across the state. Our kids were worn out by that third match, but they did a good job of pulling through to win." The Hornets have a pair of home games this week - Tuesday against Mexia (5:00-6:00-7:00) and Friday versus Stephenville (4:30-4:30-5:30 PM).
