GIRL'S POWERLIFTING: Gold Again...GHS 1st at Stephenville

(Posted Monday, February 23)  In its biggest stage so far this season, Gatesville High shattered the competition to claim championship honors at the Stephenville Invitational on Saturday.  The Hornets did so in fashion at the 31-team meet, winning six gold medals and having two other lifters claim medals in the final stop before this weekend's regional meet.  Cursti Cope paced the Hornet contingent, winning a gold medal and earning Lifter of the Meet honors in the 165-220 lb. classes for the fourth straight meet.  Cope, competing in the 198-lb.class, totaled 1,055 pounds (410 squat, 310 bench press, 335 deadlift).  Other gold medals went to:  Bailey Rowe (123-lb. class, 250 squat, 95 bench, 275 Deadlift, 620 total),
Elizabeth Trejo (132-lb. class, 315 squat, 160 bench, 300 deadlift, 775 total), Maria Lozada (165-lb. class, 315 squat, 150 bench, 320 deadlift, 785 total), Ilaysah Broadnax (181-lb. class, 305 squat, 125 bench, 285 deadlift, 715 total) and KayDee Sexton (220-lb. class, 430 squat, 235 bench, 350 deadlift, 1,015 total).  Jasmin Medina (285-145-315=745) and Corinna Lyon (365-185-330=880) won bronze medals in the 165-lb. and 198-lb. classes respectively.  Those seven girls, along with Pamela Griego, earned spots in Saturday's 1A-4A regional meet to be held at Gatesville High School.
