SOFTBALL: Hornets Run-Rule Temple 13-3 for 3rd Win

(Posted Wednesday, February 24)  Gatesville used an explosive fifth inning to down Class 5A Temple 13-3 here Tuesday night.  The win ended a three-game losing skid for GHS, whose early-season schedule has been filled with mostly 5A-6A schools.  The Hornets are scheduled to open play in the Waco Midway tournament Thursday, facing Bosqueville at 8 a.m. and Little Cypress - Mauriceville at 2 p.m.  The tourney runs Friday and Saturday as well.  GHS started quickly in its rout of Temple, as the Hornets shoved across three runs in the bottom-half of the first inning.  Amiah Lamar walked, went to second on a wild pitch, then raced home on Blayne McGhee's single.  McKenzie Winkler followed with a single to plate McGhee, then Evan Edmiston walked to put runners on the corners.  Winkler would score on Marleigh Mayhew's fielder's choice.  The contest would remain 3-0 through the first three frames.  Edmiston struck out three of the first six batters she faced and went the distance.  She whiffed Temple's first and last batters in the third and came out of the circle to field a bunt and remove the Tem-Cats' lead runner at third base to foil a rally.  Temple did manage to cut the lead to 3-2 in its half of the fourth, but GHS responded in the bottom when Shelby McMichael (3-for-3) drilled a rocket down the left field line for a 2-run homer.  Up 5-3, the Hornets would end things in the fifth inning.  Edmiston singled and Mayhew reached on a FC, then Kayleigh Wright singled up the middle to bring in a run.  Mayhew would score when Chesney Smith's infield grounder was misplayed, giving GHS a 7-3 lead with still no outs in the frame.  The Hornets would tack on more - McGhee (4-for-4) had a bases-loaded single to left field to bring in a pair of teammates, Edmiston's second hit of the fifth produced an RBI, then Wright ended the contest with a run-scoring laser to the center field wall.
