Hello and welcome to Mrs. Blanchard's webpage. I am looking forward to my sixth year teaching at GHS. I graduated from GHS in 2003. I attended college at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and received my Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2007. This will be my eleventh year of teaching.

I have twin girls that will turn four in April: Sadie and Penny. They are fraternal twins and are total opposites of each other! They love smiling, laughing, playing, and getting into everything! Don't be surprised if toddler cartoons get brought up during a lesson. It's all we watch these days!

I have always enjoyed science and absolutely enjoy teaching. I must say, this is my dream job! I have many things planned for this year that will make biology engaging, exciting and educational! All students taking biology must pass the biology EOC in the spring. The biology EOC has been cancelled this year. You may find the biology TEKS and Pre-AP biology course guide attached to reference throughout the school year.

Kingdoms of life_Review (Biology 8th period ONLY)

Check your understanding of the six kingdoms of life. Complete this worksheet without your notes and see what you can do from memory. Then compare your answers with your notes and see how you did! If you missed many or were unable to answer questions, rewatch the Amoeba Sisters video: Classification or look over your notes.

Kingdoms of Life_NOTES ( Biology 8th period ONLY)

Organisms are classified on these major traits: cell type (is it prokaryotic or eukaryotic?), the number of cells (is it one celled or has many cells?), presence of cell wall (what is its material?), ways in which is gets its nutrition (does it make its own food or get food from different sources?) and how it reproduces (asexually or sexually?).

Biology (8th period ONLY)

Review taxonomy and classification. Answer the 10 multiple choice questions onto a sheet of paper or Google Doc to check your understanding of taxonomy and classification. Answers will be posted in Remind this afternoon to grade your work. If you miss more than three questions, please review with posted video, power point, or email with questions!

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Don't forget to wear green. I am posting a powerpoint to review the Amoeba Sisters video posted yesterday. Please refer to both to answer the six "check your understanding" questions throughout the powerpoint. You may write your answers onto paper or a Google doc. You do not have to write the questions or answer in complete sentences.

TEKS:

(8) Science concepts. The student knows that taxonomy is a branching classification based on the shared characteristics of organisms and can change as new discoveries are made. The student is expected to:

(A) define taxonomy and recognize the importance of a standardized taxonomic system to the scientific community;

(B) categorize organisms using a hierarchical classification system based on similarities and differences shared among groups; and

(C) compare characteristics of taxonomic groups, including archaea, bacteria, protists, fungi, plants, and animals.
