Advanced Programs
What are Advanced Classes?
The goal of Gatesville ISD Advanced Courses is to prepare students to succeed in high school courses and higher education classwork after high school.
Advanced classes (preAP, AP, Dual Credit) are taught at a faster pace and cover more material in greater depth than regular level classes providing a more rigorous set of instructional expectations.
Advanced courses carry extra grade point percentages.

Helpful Questions & Answers
-
- What are the actions and effects of withdrawing if enrolled in a dual credit class?
- Withdrawing from a dual credit class must be done by the deadline set by the college. The student will then be enrolled into the high school course. If the deadline has passed the student will receive a grade for the course and that course will be placed on the transcript and GPA will be figured. The student will then be placed in a credit recovery program through GHS. Ex - A student that drops dual credit English 3 will be placed in on-level high school English 3. Students dropping the OnRamps cours will receive 10 points when transferring to the on-level high school course. If the grade is a 72 in dual credit English 3, 10 points will be added when transferring to the high school on-level English 3 course. The transfer grade will be an 82. This does not apply at semester, only at the conclusion of the 1st grade reporting period.
- How do you know if your child is eligible for the DUKE Tip program? (JH students)
- The junior high counselor meets with eligible students and sends home an information packet at the end of September.
- Is the new GPA system in line with the rest of the state or will this cause their GPA's to appear lower with the pre-AP/honors classes only counting at 4.5?
- GPA figurations vary from district to district. Every district is different.
- Is there a difference between the state and national ACT or SAT?
- The state ACT and national ACT tests are the same tests. The only difference is when they are offered. State ACT tests can only be offered during the school day to the students that attend that school. The National ACT test is offered on a national day where any student can sign up to take at any school that is a testing site.
- Do colleges accept both the state and national ACT scores?
- Colleges do accept both state and national ACT scores.
- The no pass no play exemption rule for pre-AP classes seems like it would be an incentive for a student to enroll and be able to not do any work and still be eligible for athletics. Would you please address this?
- We do not want to discourage any student involved in UIL activities (band, choir, athletics, academics) from taking pre-AP, AP, dual credit or OnRamps. We have created procedures for teachers to follow if a student is not being successful. A student must pass the class in order to receive course credit toward graduation requirements.
- Can students use military benefits to pay for Dual Credit? (GI Bill, Hazlewood Act)
- The GI Bill and Hazlewood Act do not cover the costs of dual credit courses. These programs do not consider dual credit classes as a requirement to graduate high school.

- All Gatesville ISD high school students taking OnRamps courses during the 2021-22 school year will have an associated $149 course fee ($99 for free and reduced lunch students) per 3-4 credit hour course. Gatesville ISD contributes $100 toward each 3-4 credit hour course, reducing the fee to $49 ($0 for free and reduced lunch students).
- This payment is due during the first 6 weeks of the course.
- How does a student request accommodations? Is there a deadline?
- When registering, students will complete their accommodations. There is NO deadline, however, if students do not select their accommodations while registering, UT will not provide them.
- Is a 60 still the UIL eligibility requirement?
- OnRamps courses do follow the minimum grade requirements in advanced courses for participation in UIL activities. Students involved in UIL activities must maintain a minimum of a 60 average in all advanced courses to be considered passing with regard to the UIL “No Pass - No Play” rule.

- OnRamps adds the extra time/accommodations for students onto their assignments. So it is built into their assignments.
- The reading materials for courses are online but do students have the ability to purchase a book if necessary?
- Students do not have the ability to purchase books for courses. OnRamps does provide all required reading materials through the course.
- Is the weighted GPA correlated only to college success? In other words, if a student drops at the midpoint do they still get the 10 points at the local level?
- The deadline to drop an OnRamps course and be placed in an on-level high school course is at the end of the 1st grade reporting period.
- Students requesting to drop the OnRamps course will be placed in a local on-level high school course. Ex - A student that drops OnRamps US History will be placed in on-level high school US History. Students dropping the OnRamps cours will receive 10 points when transferring to the on-level high school course. If the grade is a 72 in OnRamps US History, 10 points will be added when transferring to the high school on-level US History course. The transfer grade will be an 82. This does not apply at semester, only at the conclusion of the 1st grade reporting period. i.
